Kay Scarpetta Series, Book 19

The new Kay Scarpetta novel from the world's #1 bestselling crime writer.

Determined to find out what happened to her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, murdered six months earlier, Kay Scarpetta travels to the Georgia Prison for Women, where an inmate has information not only on Fielding, but also on a string of grisly killings. The murder of an Atlanta family years ago, a young woman on death row, and the inexplicable deaths of homeless people as far away as California seem unrelated. But Scarpetta discovers connections that compel her to conclude that what she thought ended with Fielding's death and an attempt on her own life is only the beginning of something far more destructive: a terrifying terrain of conspiracy and potential terrorism on an international scale. And she is the only one who can stop it.

Excerpts-
  • From the cover

With high-tension suspense and cutting-edge technology, Patricia Cornwell—the world's #1 bestselling crime writer—once again proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall in this remarkable novel featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

On her quest to find out exactly what happened to her recently murdered former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, Scarpetta drives to the Georgia Prison for Women to meet a convicted sex offender and the mother of a vicious and diabolically brilliant killer. Against the advice of her FBI forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley, Scarpetta is determined to hear this woman out.

Scarpetta has both personal and professional reasons to learn more about a string of grisly killings: the murder of a Savannah family years earlier, a young woman on death row, and then other inexplicable deaths that begin to occur at a breathtaking pace. Driven by inner forces, Scarpetta discovers connections that compel her to conclude that what she thought ended with Fielding's death and an attempt on her own life is only the beginning of something far more destructive: a terrifying terrain of conspiracy and potential terrorism on an international scale.

And she is the only one who can stop it.

About the Author-
  • Patricia Cornwell is considered one of the world's bestselling crime writers. Her intrepid medical examiner Kay Scarpetta first appeared on the scene in 1990 with Postmortem—the only novel to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards and the French Prix du Roman d'Aventure in a single year—and Cruel and Unusual, which won Britain's prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author. Ms. Cornwell's work is translated into 36 languages across more than 120 countries.
Kate Burton has appeared in such films as August and Life with Mikey. Her theater work includes Broadway appearances in Doonesbury and the revival of Stephen Sondhein's Company. She has previously read Running with the Demon, Crooked Little Heart, and Intensity for Random House AudioBooks.
Reviews-
  • AudioFile Magazine Narrator Kate Burton is the best thing about the latest Patricia Cornwell mystery. Her crisp, no-nonsense delivery helps keep an unnecessarily complex plot moving, from beginning to convoluted end. The question that comes to mind while listening is why does forensics scientist Kay Scarpetta act so illogically? Scarpetta delves into the twisted past of her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, who was murdered in the last novel. From there, the story branches out to a confusing miasma of murder and other mysterious doings. The solution is a bit far-fetched, and the method Scarpetta uses to solve the murders is even more unlikely. It's not a bad book, but it pales before Cornwell's work of a decade ago. M.S.
